Fluoride Treatments and Sealants in SE Edmonton

Tooth decay is one of the most prevalent childhood diseases. Fortunately, you can take steps to help prevent it. Thanks to preventative dentistry options like fluoride and sealants, you can significantly lower your child’s risk of developing cavities.

What are Dental Sealants?

Doctor looking in little girls mouthSealants are protective coatings that cover the deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth. Typically, we recommend sealing the permanent molars, which erupt around ages 6 and 12, respectively. They are semi-permanent and can last for several years. However, sticky types of food can pull them off teeth.

With sealants, your child can easily brush their chewing surfaces to remove all food residue. Otherwise, the particles are likely to get caught in the narrow grooves, which can lead to decay.

The Dental Sealant Process

Typically, it only takes a few minutes to apply sealants to your child’s teeth. First, we use an absorbent pad or cotton to keep the tooth isolated. From there, we condition the tooth, rinse it clean, then thoroughly dry the surface. Next, the sealant is dabbed onto the tooth and cured with a bright light. Most will last for 20-25 years but they can be touched up if necessary.

Professional Fluoride Application

Fluoride helps strengthen teeth to make them more resistant to decay. Like calcium, this mineral is important for strong tooth enamel. After your child’s cleaning, we recommend applying fluoride gel/varnish to aid in remineralisation. These regular applications can reverse early signs of weak enamel as well as manage tooth sensitivity.
